Public Housing
The Melrose Housing Authority (MHA) owns and manages 322 units of State-Aided Family & Elderly Conventional Housing.
The MHA's family 705 program developments are scattered sites throughout the city of melrose. These developments have two, three, four, and five bedroom units. Residents at these developments pay a rent based on 27% of their adjusted monthly income and are responsible for paying gas and electric utilities.
The MHA has two high-rise elderly housing developments(667 program), the Julian Steele Building and the CJ McCarthy Apartments with 305 Units total. All developments have on-site laundry and community facilities. All utilities are included at the high-rise developments, where residents pay a rent based on 30% of their adjusted monthly income.
The CJ McCarthy high-rise elderly housing development (667 program) has 150 total units, 7 units which have been modified to be Handicap Accessible and 20 Efficiency Studio Apartments in addition to it’s regular one-bedroom units. The Julian Steele House has 155 One bedroom units.
Eligibility is based on income and a demonstrated ability to comply with all lease provisions through favorable past housing history and a criminal records check. Residents remain eligible as long as they are in compliance with their lease and/or until their rent equals DHCD established maximum allowable rent levels.
